> Termas de Chillan
We
consider this mountain to be the crown jewel of the Andean ski resorts.
Termas de Chillan holds a special place in the heart of CASA Tours owners,
guides, and guests. This mountain has been responsible for more epic powder
days, adrenaline-inducing lines, and utterances of “holy-#@!$ this
good!” than any other resort in South America. With it’s wide-open
terrain, limitless backcountry, uncrowded slopes, laid back mountain scene,
and consistent snow conditions, Termas de Chillan is hands down one of
the best big-mountain skiing destinations in the world. It is so good
that we have made it the backbone of most of our Chilean tours.
On the southern slope of the 3,122 meter (10,243 ft) Volcan Chillan are
nine lifts, which offer the longest rides in South America, up to 2,500
meters (8,200 ft) in length. Pirigallo, a steep bowl on the eastern side
of the mountain, is a paradise for those brave enough to descend. There
are opportunities to tour into the wide open Siete Marias, or skin up
for the ascent of either one or both of the twin peaks (Volcan Chillan
and Volcan Nevados).
Las Trancas, a sleepy alpine town nestled between the peaks, offers accommodation
only seven kilometers below the resort. Our home at Cabanas Rucahue offers
comfortable lodging, with individual ski chalets including wood burning
stoves and kitchens.
