Volcan Llaima is situated between Pucon, Villarrica and Termas de Chillan in Southern Chile, about 85 kilometers northeast of Temuco. Llaima is a classic Andean volcanic peak, and offers some amazing skiing and snowboarding on its western aspects. It is home to Las Araucarias ski resort, a very small but very scenic and friendly resort at the base of the volcano, nestled in a forest of Araucaria (“monkey puzzle”) trees. Despite only 1 chairlift and 3 surface lifts, there is a large amount of lift-access terrain to explore. Alternatively (and recommended), it is possible hitch a ride on a snowcat to the upper reaches of the volcano. From there, it is a quick 300-400 meter skin or bootpack to the peak, with 360o views of the Andes, the Pacific Ocean, and some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes you will ever see. Then, strap on your skis or board, and carve huge turns down the volcanic cone, exploring the awesome lava-flow terrain. With the right conditions, it is possible to ride the araucaria forest glades between the odd looking monkey-puzzle trees…It feels like you’re skiing in a Dr. Suess-inspired landscape!
